The Mavericks Contest Window 2009/10

Mavericks 2009/2010

The infamous big wave contest held at Half Moon Bay, California, is now in its official waiting period.

Mavericks can serve up waves of anything between 30- 40ft and sometimes beyond, although not a always a dead-cert, and last year was a no show.

This yearcontestants and organisers alike are really hopeful with the news from official surf forecasterMark Sponsler of Stormsurf.comThe El Nio season, which has already begun, should bring a higher number of storms moving from the International Dateline into the Gulf of Alaska than in years previous. Those storms should have the potential to push larger and more consistent surf down the Pacific Coast into California. It’s likely there will be several good opportunities to hold the contest between now and March 31 when the contest window closes..

Total prize money for this years competition stands at $150k with $50k for the winner.

Competitors
Matt Ambrose, Ben Andrews, Grant Baker, Ion Banner, Chris Bertish, Carlos Burle, Kenny Collins, Shane Desmond, Nathan Fletcher, Brock Little, Greg Long, Josh Loya, Peter Mel, Shawn Rhodes, Ryan Seelbach, Evan Slater, Tyler Smith, Jamie Sterling, Anthony Tashnick, Darryl Virostko, Grant Washburn, Dave Wassell, Tim West, Zach Wormhoudt.

About Mavericks and The Mavericks Surf Contest

Every winter season, Mother Nature offers up the oceans harshest conditions and the giant, unpredictable waves that characterize Mavericks and the annual Mavericks Surf Contest. Frigid waters, dangerous currents, jagged rocks and the ever-present threat of the great white shark. When weather conditions are just right, the 24 chosen surfers will make the official contest call. Once the call is made, they will have only 24 hours to arrive in Half Moon Bay to face the extreme conditions, thunderous waves and each other. Coined as “the wave beyond,” the Mavericks brand inspires hardcore athletes to face the unpredictably raw power of Mother Nature, and stirs the souls of those who aspire to challenge their own limits. Mavericks remains true to its core: a cold, mysterious and foreboding place that demands respect from everyone who goes there and inspires them to attempt the extraordinary.

HALF MOON BAY, California, June 23, 2009

Mavericks Ready to Open the 2009/2010 Big Wave Season in November

Earliest Contest Season Opening Ever, Preceded by FUEL TV Program and Mavericks Live Tour Concert Series

Mavericks Surf Ventures, Inc. (Mavericks) today announced that the official waiting period for The 2009/2010 Mavericks Surf Contest will open on November 1, 2009. Mavericks CEO Keir J. Beadling summed up the excitement, saying, Were thrilled to announce that this years big-wave contest season will begin earlier than ever before. We have long understood the importance of increasing the size of the contest window, but havent been able to do so. Last seasons events further highlighted how valuable a November opening date can be. Now, thanks to the support of everyone involved with the contest, we will make the November opening a reality.
Todays announcement was especially meaningful to the athletes who surf Mavericks. After watching the last contest season come and go without any contestable surf, the competitors are more eager than ever for the 2009/2010 contest season to begin. Beadling added, Last season was obviously very difficult for both the surfers and the fans. This year, we are going to do all we can to ensure that the surfers and fans alike get to experience a memorable contest. While we are still at the mercy of Mother Nature, we can now say that we are better prepared than ever for what she throws our way.
Beadling also thanked the sponsors who made the November 1st opening date possible. We are grateful to our sponsor partners whose support was vital to making the opening of the contest season in November a reality, and for ensuring that the surfers will be competing for a record-breaking $150,000 prize purse. We are fortunate that all of our sponsor partners recognize the importance of opening the contest window on November 1st, and that they have demonstrated their commitment to making sure we are able to do so.
Along with announcing that the upcoming contest season will open at the start of November, Mavericks also announced that FUEL TV will soon air a programthe Very Best of Mavericksthat highlights the best days at Mavericks over the past several years. The program will feature stunning footage of the action from these amazing sessions and will premiere this August. Fans can stay tuned for additional details about the FUEL TV program, plus a major new partnership for this seasons Mavericks Live Tour concert series, by keeping an eye on www.maverickssurf.com. Although the contest season is still a few months away, we celebrate Mavericks all year round, noted Beadling. Between the FUEL TV show and the upcoming Mavericks Live Tour concert series, fans should have enough to hold them over as they await the start of the 2009/2010 contest season.

Mavericks To Honor 35th Anniversary Season

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

HALF MOON BAY
California
June 19th 2009

Mavericks Surf Ventures, Inc. (Mavericks) announced today that the upcoming 2009/2010 big wave season at Mavericks will honor and celebrate the 35th anniversary of Jeff Clarks first session at the now world famous break. In the winter of 1975, the then17 year old Clark first paddled out to the nautical hazard named after a white haired German Shepherd. In a remarkable personal odyssey, Clark then surfed Mavericks completely alone for 15 years before the news media began reporting on the 50foot waves, house sized rocks, and bone chilling waters that characterize this treacherous locale.
From those solitary beginnings, Mavericks has become an international phenomenon. The annual Mavericks Surf Contest® brings the worlds preeminent big wave surfers together on 24 hours notice, along with tens of thousands of spectators and millions more who watch the action via television broadcast and webcast. Adding to the drama, the contest is completely dependent on the whim of Mother Nature delivering contest worthy surf conditions. Some years (as happened this past season) she holds back, as if to give the surfers another year to reconsider their perilous intent. Over the years, the Mavericks prize purse has grown to $150,000, the largest in the history of big wave surfing competition. In the 2009/2010 season, the invitees will be competing for this record prize purse, thanks to the support of Moose Guen and Jane Sutherland of MVision Private Equity Advisors, and Barracuda Networks.
“Coincident with the 35th anniversary celebration, Mavericks will inaugurate a new Contest Director”. Said Mavericks CEO Keir J. Beadling, Mavericks truly belongs to everyone, so were looking forward to democratizing the contest direction process. Studying the seasonal swell patterns, and determining if and when to call the surfers is no small responsibility. Were excited to pass the torch to the next generation of Mavericks enthusiasts to assure the contests continued success. Beadling then summed up the feelings of everyone in the Mavericks family, saying, We have all been inspired by the passion and bravery that Jeff has displayed, and will remain in awe of his accomplishments. Jeffs legacy is forever etched in the history Mavericks. Meanwhile, Clark continues to serve on Mavericks Board of Directors.
Additional details regarding The 2009/2010 Mavericks Surf Contest® season will be announced in the coming weeks.

Mavericks Holds Closing Ceremony for 09

Monday, April 6th, 2009

HALF MOON BAY, Calif., April 15, 2009 – The contest season for the 2009 Mavericks Surf Contest Presented by Sony Ericsson came to an official close tonight, as several of the world’s best big wave surfers, as well as their friends, family, and members of the media joined to bid farewell to the 2009 season. “Tonight was a special night for everyone who is associated with Mavericks,” said Mavericks CEO Keir J. Beadling. “It gave us a chance to thank everyone who has worked to make this contest possible. We would like to thank the surfers, who have been as as patient as they are courageous. We are also grateful to our sponsors for all they have done to support this event.” Sponsors of the 2009 contest were Sony Ericsson, Jim Beam Bourbon, Moose Guen and Jane Sutherland of MVision, Barracuda Networks Inc., Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., FLO TV, FUEL TV, myspace action sports, Oceano Hotel and Spa, CLIF BAR & Co., the Bay Club, The Corporate Law Group, Rickshaw Bagworks, Vertical Response, Surfer Magazine, Sam’s Chowder House, Stormsurf.com, Airship Ventures, Capture Technologies, Doc’s ProPlugs, Jeff Clark Surfboards and Mavericks Surf Shop.
As the gatherers said goodbye to the 2009 contest season, they also cast a collective eye towards the future, in anticipation of the 2010 contest. Their spirits were lifted by the news that the record-breaking $150,000 prize purse will again be available in 2010. “We would like to thank Moose Guen and Jane Sutherland of MVision, as well as Barracuda Networks for ensuring that these incredible athletes will once again be competing for a prize purse that pays tribute to their talent and bravery,” added Beadling.
Beadling also stated that one of the company’s main goals is to lengthen the 2010 contest window by opening the window on November 1st. “We recognize the importance of having the contest window open at the start of November, and we are currently working very hard to make this happen.” Commenting on the value of opening the contest window on the first of November, Contest Director Jeff Clark stated, “It’s nearly impossible to overstate the significance of opening the contest window on the 1st of November. If we’d had the support to do so in previous years, we would almost certainly have been able to put on a contest every year. If we are able to do so for the 2010 contest, we will be ready for whatever Mother Nature offers us.”

$150,000 Prize Will Extend to 2010 Season

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Mavericks announced today that the official waiting period for The 2009 Mavericks Surf Contest Presented by Sony Ericsson is now closed. The waiting period began on January 1, 2009 and officially ended on March 31, 2009. Showcasing 24 of the world’s finest big-wave surfers, the largest prize purse in the history of big-wave surfing, and four former Contest Champions, The Mavericks Surf Contest will return again next season to the epic Half Moon Bay break.

Every winter season, Mother Nature offers up the ocean’s harshest conditions and the giant, unpredictable waves that characterize the Mavericks break and the annual Mavericks Surf Contest; frigid waters, dangerous currents, jagged rocks and the ever-present threat of the great white shark. Mix these with perfect weather conditions, and 24 chosen surfers await the contest call from legendary big-wave surf pioneer and Contest Director, Jeff Clark. They then have only 24 hours to arrive in Half Moon Bay to face the extreme conditions, thunderous waves and each other. That much-anticipated call was never issued this year, however, as contestable conditions did not develop during the waiting period, and the giant appears to be entering its annual slumber until next season.

“After consulting with a large number of the Mavericks family-Contest Director Jeff Clark, longtime Mavericks competitors, agencies focused on environmental protection and public safety, surf forecasters, and our sponsor partners-we have decided to conclude the 2009 waiting period and turn our eyes towards next season,” said Mavericks CEO Keir J. Beadling. “I want to personally thank our army of more than five-hundred special human beings and seventy-five committed organizations for their efforts in getting ready and staying on alert for Mother Nature this season. It’s a tremendous undertaking unlike anything else, and we’re very lucky to have such a passionate support crew.”

Long-awaited MavericksT gear coming soon

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

HALF MOON BAY, Calif., February 4, 2009 – Mavericks Surf Ventures, Inc. (Mavericks) today announced it will launch its long-awaited MavericksT brand apparel line at the February 2009 MAGIC Marketplace tradeshow in Las Vegas from February 17 through 19.

The Stoke

“Mavericks was known mostly as a navigational hazard to local fishermen, but to me it was the ultimate challenge,” said Mavericks pioneer and big-wave surfing legend Jeff Clark. “I began surfing Mavericks alone in 1975 and would have welcomed anyone to come join me. But for fifteen years no one came. Every time I chose to paddle out to Mavericks, I had to draw on my deepest power, my commitment, my training and pure love of surfing. I now share that thirst for Mavericks’ raw power with some of the fiercest warriors out there. For me, Mavericks embodies everything I have been looking for in surfing and in pushing myself to the extreme. What goes down out there inspires people from all walks of life to push themselves beyond their limits, to test their own strength and courage. Mavericks is one of the natural wonders of the world that we can all share; it forges a connection between us. It’s a life-changing experience. The Mavericks brand harnesses all this collective power. It is a movement that belongs to everyone, and we’re really stoked to launch the next phase of Mavericks’ evolution with our new apparel line at MAGIC.”

Mavericks Announces Environment Initiatives

MAVERICKS ANNOUNCES AMBITIOUS ENVIRONMENT-FOCUSED INITIATIVES FOR THE 2009

MAVERICKS SURF CONTESTHALF MOON BAY, Calif., January 23, 2009 – Mavericks Surf Ventures, Inc. (Mavericks) today announced a program to advance its strong and long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility at the site and activities associated with the annual Mavericks Surf Contest.

“Mavericks is a natural phenomenon of the highest order. The organizers, our partners, and the heroes who surf at this break hold the environment in great esteem,” said Mavericks CEO Keir J. Beadling. “The Mavericks family is committed to preserving the beauty and health of the local ecology. We have made ‘Stewardship’ one of our core corporate values. Most of our efforts have been focused on protecting the area around the Mavericks break itself. That’s where the company got its start, and where we continue to have the largest potential impact. But we hope to make broader contributions as well. We want to encourage people from all over the world, educate them on ways to make positive contributions in their own coastal communities. Serious respect for the environment has been at the core of our event’s DNA since day one. This year we will make even more ambitious efforts.” ”

First Carbon Neutral Event and 20 Bags of Trash. In 2006, Mavericks launched an historic partnership with CLIF Bar & Co., the famously eco-friendly food maker, creating the first-ever “climate neutral” surfing event that year. This partnership ensured that the Contest’s environmental impact was as light as possible and that the Half Moon Bay site was left in the same or better condition than before the event. Mavericks and CLIF Bar minimized CO2 emissions and waste, employed best practices to use sustainable materials during the event, and provided education stations that highlighted composting, recycling and carbon-offset opportunities. CLIF Bar was honored later that year by the US Environmental Protection Agency in part for its work with Mavericks. At the 2008 event, Green Team staffers fully separated and recycled 100% of waste on Contest day. We ended up with just 20 bags of garbage from 50,000 fans.

The Green Team Returns. This season, Mavericks will continue to step up its level of environmental responsibility. The CLIF Bar Green Team will again help minimize the Contest’s footprint and educate fans about ways to reduce the impact of their own lives. CLIF Bar’s Northern California Field Marketing Manager, Peter Berridge, said “Mavericks is a core partnership for us; a prestigious athletic competition wholly dependent on Mother Nature and harmonies in the natural world. Few events offer such an authentic opportunity to support outdoor sports while inviting spectators and participants to be more conscientious of their own ecological footprint, to help us Protect the Places we Play.” More information is available at www.clifbar.com.

First Solar-Powered Event. Notions of environmental responsibility are moving beyond mere carbon offset credits, and Mavericks is moving along with them. This year’s Contest will be the first major surfing event using solar-powered generators to provide power to all land-based operations. This new technology from Mobile Green Power, Inc. is a completely green, renewable energy source with zero emissions, zero carbon footprint and zero noise. Even on a Contest Day with little to no sunlight, the solar generators will produce a consistent power source, and bring a completely new dimension to outdoor sporting events.

Alternative Viewing Options. Millions of fans witnessed the 2008 Contest live webcast footage last season. Further to reduce foot traffic at the event and entice fans to experience the Contest remotely, Mavericks will spread its webcast even more broadly. FUEL TV will showcase the first-ever high-definition live surfing webcast at www.fuel.tv/maverickssurf. MySpace will webcast the Contest in standard definition at www.myspace.com/maverickssurf. And FLO TV will distribute the world’s first live big-wave surfing webcast on the mobile platform-more information is available at www.flo.tv/mavericks. The webcast will also be simulcast once again at AT&T Park in San Francisco, where ticketed fans can watch the Contest live and in high definition on the big screen in centerfield or from HDTV screens throughout the venue. And for those fans who choose to visit the Contest in-person, Mavericks is partnering with San Francisco’s Bike and Roll to offer Contest spectators the option of renting bicycles to get around the Pillar Point community and Mavericks area on Contest Day under their own power.

Contest Partners’ “Greening” Efforts. A number of this season’s sponsor partners bring deep experience in environmental sustainability and responsibility. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has set a goal of being entirely energy efficient by 2010. It recently commissioned the first phase of what will be one of the country’s largest private solar installations, right on the heels of building one of the largest fuel cell installations in the United States. On Contest Day, SNBC will have a sustainability representative on-hand to provide an overview of the company’s history and all the state-of-the-art technologies employed to reduce waste and maximize efficiency. More information is available at http://www.sierranevada.com/environment.html.

Mavericks’ official host hotel, Oceano Resort and Spa, is one of California’s most environmentally-sound luxury hotels. Oceano’s activities include, for example, a laundry facility utilizing low energy and a biodegradable cleaning program, the most innovative and environmental friendly chemical-free room cleaning technology on the West Coast, an in-room recycling program, preferred parking for LEV and FEV (low emitting vehicles, fuel efficient vehicles), water-efficient landscaping that utilizes native and drought-tolerant plants, and reclaimed cooking oil used to produce Bio Diesel fuel. More information is available at http://www.oceanohalfmoonbay.com/?p=features.

Contest sponsor Rickshaw Bagworks, Inc. is a new San Francisco-based messenger bag and urban gear company focused on sustainable design and drawing inspiration from the “zero waste” manufacturing movement. By eliminating scrap and recycling materials, making use of domestically-sourced fabric, webbing, plastic components and labels, Rickshaw has shortened its raw material supply chain and reduced its ecological footprint. Rickshaw and Mavericks are partnering to produce an eco-friendly MavericksTM messenger bag, and even exploring creating future MavericksTM bags utilizing recycled material such as the actual Mavericks Surf Contest banners deployed onsite on Contest Day. More information is available at www.rickshawbags.com.

Save the Waves “Surfonomics” Study. Mavericks non-profit partner Save The Waves Coalition has launched a new “Surfonomics” study on the impact of the Mavericks wave and the annual Mavericks Surf Contest to the regional economy in and around Half Moon Bay. Stanford University’s Center for Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD) and the University of Hawai’i’ at Manoa’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning will be executing the study under Save The Waves’ guidance, which will combine economic impact valuations with those based on intrinsic or cultural values of a coastal location with a world-class wave such as Mavericks. “This study is an exciting and important part of Save The Waves’ Surfonomics’ program designed to educate the public on the value of natural and pristine surfing coastline around the world,” said Save The Waves Executive Director Dean LaTourrette. “Mavericks is an iconic break, and people need to understand the significant economic, environmental and social value it has to local communities.” The study and others like it will also help support a larger initiative launched by Save The Waves in 2008, the World Surfing Reserves program – which aims to proactively designate and protect the word’s greatest waves and their surrounding environments. The study and surveying will be conducted during the 2009 big-wave season at Mavericks, including at the 2009 Mavericks Surf Contest, and is expected to be complete by Fall 2009. More information is available at www.savethewaves.org. Contest sponsor Jim Beam Bourbon has produced a limited edition Mavericks Surf Contest label which will be gifted to each Contest competitor and given away to legal-purchase age consumers during local promotions. The specialty label supports protection of coastal environments, with up to $5,000 being donated to Save The Waves Coalition.

Environmental Partners. Mavericks Surf Contest organizers work closely with Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS), to protect the wildlife and the habitats of the part of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (Sanctuary) where the Contest takes place. GFNMS enforces the rules and regulations designed to protect the 948 nautical miles that make up one of the most productive marine ecosystems on the planet. Since the Contest takes place during a time in which seabirds and marine mammals are engaged in breeding activities or in migrating through, the sanctuary will help to minimize wildlife disturbance and provide information to attendees about minimizing their impact on the environment.

Other environmental partners working closely with Mavericks to ensure that the ocean, beach and surrounding area are protected include the San Mateo County Harbor District, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Thank You Ocean, the California Coastal Commission, Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth, World Savvy, Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce Eco-Tourism Initiative, Livability Project, and the San Mateo County History Museum. More information regarding Mavericks’ Environmental Policy can be found at http://maverickssurf.com/Help/Environment.aspx.
