The RipCurl Pro Search, Stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 Association of Surfing ProfessionalWorld Tour & Rip Curl Womens Pro Search Stop No. 4 of 7 on the 2009 ASP Womens World Tour at Peniche, Portugal 19th-30th October 2009.
This weekend saw Kelly Slater (reigning 9 times ASP world champion) eliminated by the Australian Owen Wright during round 2 of the Rip Curl Pro Search on Saturday 24th October 2009 at Belgas, Penriche.
At only 19 years old Owen is just over half Kelly Slaters age, butyouth prevailed over experience on this occasion.
“I feel great, it was a really tough heat with not many waves,“ Wright said. “Kelly (Slater) got the jump on me and opened up early so I sat and waited to try and get the bigger and better waves. Every time I have watched a heat of Kellys on the tour the waves turn on so I was stoked to be out there with him and have such good exchanges.“
Sunday 25th October only saw 3 heats of round 2 completed due to conditions deteriorating.
Adriano de Souza elimated fellow Brazilian Jihad Khodr
“They were tough conditions out there, Jihad is a great competitor so I was very careful of him and I am really happy to move through to the next round and keep my title hopes alive. I have never got through to Round 2 at a Rip Curl Pro Search event so I am really happy about that, hopefully I can keep it going. I am just having fun, it is the first time I have the chance to get the title but I am still young, so there is not really any pressure.”,Adriano explained.

I was aiming at a final here and to take the win is really nice, especially in front of the Canarian crowd who has been so supportive for years now. It wasnt an easy finish with fewer good waves but I really waited patiently for the better ones and got them.

Autistic Kids go Surfing
I read today about autistic kids going surfing (you can read the full story here), and how much both the kids and surfers get out of it.
It turns out the UK’s first surfing event dedicated to children with autism took place at Bigbury-on-Sea in Devon on Saturday 8 September 2007, which you can read about here.
After a bit of googling I found out about Surfers Healing, who seem to be the pioneers in this field.
Here’s a video interview with Surfers Healing founder Izzy Paskowitz, giving us an insight into what its all about.
All I can say is good luck to them, and what a great joy it must be to able to share the experience of surfing with those with disabilities.

On 2nd October 2009 the Surf Industry Manufacturers’ Image Award for Wetsuit of the Year went to the O’Neil Psychofreak.
The Awards were heldin Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The SIMA Image Awards identify the surf industry’s most influential companies and recognize them for their efforts to advance and grow the industry.
Determined to make the warmest high performance cold water wetsuit, O’Neill introduced the revolutionary Psychofreak with XDS-Air neoprene in fall 2008. As the original wetsuit manufacturer it is our blood to push the evolution of the wetsuit, stated John Hunter, Senior Product Designer at O’Neill Wetsuits. Unlike traditional cold water wetsuits that utilize thicker neoprene, the Psychofreak with O’Neill’s unique XDS-Air neoprene, a complex 3D structure of rubber and trapped air components, provides increased insulation similar to a double paned window without additional thickness or restriction. The ultimate goal in designing wetsuits is to make them as warm and flexible as possible; we obviously achieved that with the Psychofreak.
Chosen by fellow surf industry companies and retailers the SIMA Image Awards are a reflection of how brands and their products are viewed within the industry, but more importantly by those selling the product to the customer. I really want to thank all of our dealers for supporting O’Neill for over fifty-five years and I’m stoked our dealers and customers recognize the difference between a functional innovative wetsuit and all the imitations out there, stated Pat O’Neill, CEO and President of O’Neill Wetsuits. Our dealers claim O’Neill wetsuits continue to represent seventy to eighty percent of their total wetsuits sales, so I am not surprised the Psychofreak has been recognized as the top wetsuit.
Freakfish Surf Shop has been selling O’Neill products for a number of years, and have been impressed with the quality and effectiveness of their products. Here is a little about how O’Neill got started and what they are all about.
“O’Neill, the original Californian surf, snow and lifestyle brand, was founded in 1952 when a young man named Jack O’Neill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Pioneering the world’s first neoprene wetsuit, Jack had successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bone-chilling breaks of Northern California. He opened up the garage doors to his first surf shop in Santa Cruz soon after.
While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, Jack’s initial vision of producing functional and innovative boardriding products continues to lie at the core of everything the company does. O’Neill’s set of core values innovation in style and technology has seen the brand devote itself wholeheartedly to the evolution of action sports. From the first ever neoprene wetsuit and surf leash, to the world’s first stitchless boardshorts and range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, O’Neill’s spirit of innovation will always drive the company forwards.
Today, O’Neill can be found the world over. In touch with its rich heritage and the universal stoke of boardriding culture, O’Neill will always be committed to progressing that evolution and growing its reputation as one of the world’s leading youth lifestyle brands.”
