Pat Gudauskas Sets Sights on South Africa After Rebounding to Seventh on ASP WQS
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Sunday, June 28, 2009) Patrick Gudauskas, 23, has been battling it out in the trenches on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) for years now and the San Clemente talent is devoted to earning his spot on the ASP World Tour.
Gudauskas just had an amazing run at the ASP 6-Star PRIME SriLankan Airlines Pro, launching him to seventh overall on The Grind and now the innovative regular-footer is out to carry his momentum to the ASP 6-Star Mr. Price Pro Ballito.
I think maldives was a big turning point in my season, Gudauskas said. I’ve got a lot of confidence in my surfing right now. I’ve got great equipment, and I think it was a huge booster to pull out some big moves over there. I’m hoping that momentum will carry over to this next leg. I’ve been surfing a ton and I’m looking for a win in South Africa.
Gudauskas clutch performance at the SriLankan Airlines Pro could not have come at a better time. After a booming season opening performance at the ONeill Cold Water Classic in Tasmania, Gudauskas had stumbled a bit and slipped down the ratings when he suffered an early round elimination in a stacked Round of 48 heat at his home break of Lower Trestles, but used his brother Tanners success to build his confidence back up for the Maldives event.
Lowers was a dissapointment for myself, Gudauskas said. I felt like I was surfing good, I even lost with a 16 point heat total. It was just one of those heats where Benny Bourgeois and Sebass (Sebastien Zietz) stepped up and took the heat. Tanner carried through to the quarters and that really got me heated up to do well in Maldives. It seems that I have had some close losses in the last couple of events, so I didn’t want to leave anything to chance in the Maldives. It’s a high-performance wave and I wanted to step up my level of surfing for it. Also I got onto a really good board, an Al Merrick Proton, the thing was magic carpet, and that made a huge difference in my confidence at that wave.
Gudauskas did more than just make the Final at the Premier event at Pasta Point, he managed to punt, and land, the first two inverted airs in ASP history.
It’s for sure been one of the new moves that all the progressive free-surfers have been doing, Gudauskas said. For me it started watching Aaron Cormican do one at trestles a couple of years back. I thought it was a really exciting and different move and wanted to master it. It seems like today a lot of people can do them, but it’s maybe one of those things that surfers would try 50 times and stick once or twice. I think that’s why to be completed in a heat is pretty radical. The chances of you sticking one in a 25 minute pressure cooker window of time are pretty slim.
The explosive talent is pushing the barrier of combining progressive free-surfing maneuvers while using them to his competitive advantage and finds his name alongside the likes of free-surfing magicians such as Jordy Smith and Dane Reynolds.
It’s really exciting to have my name up there with guys like Dane and Jordy, Gudauskas said. They’re definitely the most progressive surfers out there right now, and some of my favorite guys to surf with. I think that really pulling a rodeo in a heat is only a preview of things to come from our generation and younger. Guys like Dane and Jordy are pulling massive tricks and moves all the time in comps and in free-surfs. Hopefully it’s the evolution of competitive surfing to continue to grow in excitement. It’s a spectators sport, and I think people want to see exciting stuff.
Gudauskas will continue his ASP WQS campaign at the Mr. Price Pro Ballito, which runs from June 29 through July 5, 2009.

Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure presented by Jacks (ASP Grade-4)
Event No. 4 of 10 on the 2009 ASP North America Pro Junior Series (Men)
Huntington Beach, California, United States of America
June 28-29, 2009
International Field Does Battle at ASP Grade-4 Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Sunday, June 28, 2009) The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Pro Junior Series kicked off the ASP Grade-4 Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure presented by Jacks Surfboards in peaky two-foot (1 metre) conditions at South Huntington Beach Pier and saw a barrage of up-and-coming talent battle for the heightened points available at the premier event.
The Nike 6.0 Pier Pressures ASP Grade-4 status makes the event the most critical stop on all surfers campaigns in qualification for the ASP World Junior Championships held in Narrabeen, Australia. All surfers on the ASP North American Pro Junior Series are looking to compile their best four results throughout the year in an attempt to finish within the top three on the ratings to earn their spot in the coveted event.
Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA), 15, convincingly won two heats today over the tough international competition at the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure despite the drastic change in conditions from his low-tide morning heat to his high tide afternoon heat which had a gusty north wind. Andinos combined heat totals of 16.50 and 15.40, both out of 20, saw him advance into the Round of 32 where he will face the events top seeds.
Im stoked to have two good heats out here, Andino said. Each heat gets harder and even though the conditions are worse overall, when you get a good one, I think theyre actually better. Theyre bigger and fuller on the higher tide and this morning it was pretty dead on the low tide.
The young San Clemente standout is hoping he can carry his early round momentum through to the Round of 32, where he has struggled to advance in the past.
Every contest I do, I have a good Round of 64 and Round of 48 heat and then I lose in the Round of 32, Andino said. Hopefully I can put together a good heat tomorrow and break that Round of 32. I have a tough heat in the morning, but hopefully it goes well.
Chase Wilson (Newport Beach, CA), 18, also turned heads on the opening day of competition matching the days highest single wave score of a 9.25 out of 10 in his Round of 48 heat which saw him advance through to the Round of 32.
Early on in the heat I got a couple of scores, but I fell on the inside, Wilson said. Luckily I got that one at the end that allowed me to do a couple of good turns and I got the 9.
Wilson utilized his familiarity of the Huntington Beach to advance through his heat.
I live in Newport and Ive been surfing here the last few days in the afternoons to get used to these conditions, Wilson said. Im used to this kind of surf.
Oliver Kurtz (Vero Beach, FL), 18, issued the days upset when he ousted 2007 ASP World Junior runner-up Tonino Benson (Kona, HI), 17, while claiming his Round of 48 heat win in the tough afternoon conditions.
That was a really tough heat, Kurtz said. The waves were just horrible and I usually dont do well in heats like that, but theres just nothing you can do about the conditions. Either way, its good to get through the round, especially against a guy like Tonino (Benson).“
Tomorrows Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure action will begin at 8am with the Round of 32 where the events top seeds including reigning ASP World Junior Champion Kai Barger (Haiku, HI), 19, defending ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA), 19, current ASP North America Pro Junior Series ratings leader Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA), 16, explosive goofy-footer Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 18, and Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA), 19, will battle todays standouts for the 2009 crown.

IMBITUBA, Santa Catarina (Sunday, June 28, 2009) The elimination Round 2 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro was completed today, with the worlds best surfers tearing into the four-to-six foot (2 metre) waves on offer at Praia Vila.
Event No. 4 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro enjoyed sunnier weather and marginally better manageable ocean conditions for Round 2, allowing for some electrifying performances.
Jordy Smith (ZAF), 21, former ASP World Junior Champion (2006) and current ASP World No. 6, was devastating this morning during his Round 2 bout against Ben Bourgeois (USA), 30. Building momentum throughout the heat, Smith exploded with the days highest single-wave score of a 9.00 out of a possible 10 for a barrage of fully committed power turns on his forehand.
Its still pretty tough out there and its difficult to find a spot to line up, Smith said. There are some pretty good waves coming through the bowl though and if you can get on them, you can open up a bit. I just got lucky with my wave selection and was able to put up a couple of scores.
Long-touted as one of the most progressive surfers on the planet, Smith struggled during his rookie season on the ASP Dream Tour, finishing 26th in 2008. Since then, the South African has re-ignited through the opening events this year, collecting two ninths and a third en route to his current ASP World No. 6 rating.
I think I put a lot of pressure on myself last season and Im trying not to do that this year, Smith said. Im just having fun and that seems to be working out pretty well. Ive had a couple of pretty good events and Im only looking to improve.
Smith will face 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie Dustin Barca (HAW), 27, in Round 3 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro when competition resumes.
Kelly Slater (USA), 37, reigning nine-time ASP World Champion, has struggled in 2009, collecting three consecutive 17th place finishes resulting in his current ASP World No. 25 rating. Despite a Round 1 loss yesterday, Slater rallied in Round 2 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, dominating the righthanders to edge past wildcard Bernardo Miranda (BRA).
Ive been feeling a bit burned out on competition and I wasnt planning on coming to Brazil or Jeffreys Bay, Slater said. I was planning on spending a bit of time with my family, but I spoke with Renato (Hickel) and he told me that all the fans in Brazil were looking forward to it, so I decided to come and make the journey down here.
Running into setbacks with delayed flights, visa issues and missing baggage, Slater arrived only hours before yesterdays Round 1 heat, eventually going down to compatriot Tim Reyes (USA), 27, on borrowed equipment. With his surfboards arriving late last night, Slater looked well in-form this morning, even executing an impressive aerial 360 on his forehand.
Well, it took me about three days to get to Brazil and my boards didnt event show up until 11pm last night, Slater said. Ive definitely been tinkering with my equipment this season, and the board Im on is actually one I shaped its an asymmetrical, swallow-tail quad-fin. It worked pretty well out there, but the conditions are tough. Theres not really a defined bank out there, so really anyone can win.
Despite a slow start in 2009 and the absence of his renowned competitive drive, Slater acknowledges the possibility of a turning point here at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro given his history in Brazil (rallying against Andy Irons in 2003, winning the ASP World Title in 2007).
I think it was pretty obvious yesterday who was surfing well, Slater said. Joel (Parkinson) and Mick (Fanning) got some really good waves, but really anybody can win out here. Ive had some good moments here in the past and hopefully I can spark something here and get on a bit of a roll. Im happy to get through a heat and well see what happens in Round 3.
Slater will battle Ben Dunn (AUS), 23, in Round 3 when Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro competition recommences.
Nathaniel Curran (USA), 24, winner of the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) in 2008, posted his first career victory at the ASP World Tour level today, besting veteran Kieren Perrow (AUS), 32, 13.50 to 8.67 in their Round 2 heat.
Its been a difficult transition for me from the WQS to the World Tour, Curran said. Ive been playing around with boards, finding out what works best for me. The level of surfing on tour is also a major step above, but I think that the QS prepared me really well for it. Sometimes you just get tough heats. Im stoked to get through the heat and hopefully I can build a bit of momentum for a result here.
Also scoring his first win of 2009 was Michael Picon (FRA), 30, who eliminated Kai Otton (AUS), 29, 14.07 to 8.34.
Adriano de Souza (BRA), 22, current ASP World No. 5, scored a solid victory over wildcard Gustavo Fernandes (BRA), to advance through to Round 3. With the elimination of the three wildcards as well as ASP World No. 20 Jihad Khodr (BRA), 26, De Souza now leads fellow ASP Dream Tour campaigner Heitor Alves (BRA), 27, and replacement surfer Neco Padaratz (BRA) as the remaining Brazilians in the event.
For sure you can feel the support of everyone on the beach when youre in the water, De Souza said. It feels great to be competing on this level in Brazil, but Im trying not to put too much pressure on myself. Im through to the third round, which is as good as Ive ever done in this event after six years of competing here. Im feeling confident though, and I hope I can add another good result at home.
De Souza faces Greg Emslie (ZAF), 32, when Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro competition resumes.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30am to assess conditions for a possible Round 3 8am start.
When Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro competition recommences, first up will be defending event champ Bede Durbidge (AUS), 26, up against ASP Dream Tour rookie Michel Bourez (PYF), 23.

IMBITUBA, Santa Catarina (Saturday, June 27, 2009) Round 1 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, Event No. 4 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, was completed today in solid four-to-six foot (2 metre) peaks at Praia Vila in Imbituba.
Utilizing the traditional competition format, the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro saw all surfers don the singlet today, with ASP World Title contenders dominating the proceedings amidst some major upsets.
Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, former ASP World Champion (2007) and current ASP World No. 3, continued to terrorize the worlds best surfers this morning, employing his lightning-fast forehand approach to navigate the thumping beach breaks. Although slow to start, the powerful natural-footer picked up momentum throughout the heat, netting the days highest heat total of a 16.43 out of a possible 20, including a 9.50 for a blistering assault on a roping righthander.
I couldnt find a rhythm towards the start and Aritz (Aranburu) came out with a 5, I came out with a 6, Aritz got a 7 and we went back and forth, Fanning said. Towards the end, I was able to find a wave that stood up across the bank and it allowed me to really open up. I got one good turn off the top to start and just tried to stay on rail throughout the rest of the wave.
Despite being absent from last seasons event with an injury, Fanning remains one of the most dangerous surfers in Brazil, with back-to-back wins in 2006 and 2007. Sitting within striking distance of an ASP World Tour ratings jump, the Australian is focused on capitalizing at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.
Ive won the event the last two times Ive been here so hopefully I can make it a three-peat, Fanning said. Its still early days, but Im feeling fit and focused and looking to put some results together over the course of these next events. Im confident in my abilities in Brazil.
Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, current ASP World No. 1 and Fannings Gold Coast stable mate, reasserted his dominance amongst the worlds best surfers today, posting an impressive 16.00 out of a possible 20 heat total en route to a Round 1 win over Kai Otton (AUS), 29, and wildcard Guilherme Ferreira (BRA)
Its difficult out there and theres a lot of water moving but I just tried to stay focused on the task at hand, Parkinson said. I studied it a lot before the heat and worked out where I wanted to be and just aimed for that. My boards are feeling really good and I felt like I was executing the way I wanted to out there.
Ever-reserved regarding predictions for the 2009 ASP World Title race, Parkinson carries himself with a quiet intensity this season, remaining concentrated his present situation.
I dont get ahead of myself, Parkinson said. Im happy with the way Ive performed out there today, but it was only Round 1. I am looking for a result here in Brazil and I am doing everything I can to achieve it. There are several surfers out there that look to be contenders here. Im just focusing on my own program.
Tim Reyes (USA), 27, current No. 30 on the 2009 ASP World Tour ratings, caused the upset of the day, relegating reigning nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 37, to the elimination Round 2 following a closely-fought Round 1 bout.
There are some pretty fun waves out there, but our heat was pretty slow, Reyes said. I think Kelly (Slater) needed a 2-something at the end and I just went in. I was exhausted and wasnt going to chase him around for a 2. He easily could have got it, but he didnt. The clock wound down and I came away with the win.
Although Reyes has struggled thus far this season, the former ASP World No. 11 (2006) is hopeful for a return to form with a strong result in Brazil acting as the catalyst.
Ive had some pretty close heats this season and things just havent gone my way, Reyes said. I was pretty frustrated, especially in Tahiti, and I was almost ready to throw in the towel and sit down for the remainder of the year. After Tahiti, I went and got some waves to myself and cleared my head. My sponsor (of 10 years) ONeill really stood behind me and Ive come to Brazil looking for a result. I feel like my surfing is there and if I can start stringing together some results, Im sure my confidence will return.
Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 23, former ASP World Junior Champion and current ASP World No. 18, led the rookie charge today, taking down current ASP World No. 5 and heavily-favored local Adriano de Souza (BRA), 22, in challenging Round 1 conditions.
Im absolutely exhausted after that heat, Bacalso said. Theres so much water moving. I thought I was going to get smashed into the rocks. Still though, when you get on them, they can be pretty fun. I was really just trying to redeem myself after a 33rd in Tahiti, but Adriano (de Souza) is phenomenal and he definitely had all the support on the beach. Weve surfed against each other at least a dozen times and I think thats the first time I beat him stoked.
Other rookies to claim victories today alongside Bacalso were Tim Boal (FRA), 25, and Michel Bourez (PYF), 23, currently rated 25th and 35th respectively on the 2009 ASP World Tour ratings.
Chris Davidson (AUS), 32, current ASP World No. 28 and into his fifth stint as an ASP World Tour competitor, punctuated the afternoon action with the days highest single-wave score, a 9.57 out of a possible 10, for a death-defying floater before linking into several power hooks on his forehand.
I was really lucky that I was able to scratch into that one, Davidson said. It bowled up and I faded off the bottom and jammed a pretty big floater before linking a couple of turns and finishing with a floater in the end. I was stoked on the score but knew I needed a back up as Jeremy (Flores) almost got me at the end. Ive won down here before on the ASP WQS and the waves really suit me. Im definitely aiming for a big result here.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am for a possible 8am Round 2 start.

ASP Dream Tour Euro Contingent to Start Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro Saturday

Photo: Jeremy Flores (FRA) will be looking to better his runner-up finish from last year when he competes in the 2009 Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro from tomorrow Saturday, aiming at a possible first ASP World Tour event win
CAPBRETON, France (Friday, June 26, 2009) Europes seven representatives on this years ASP World Tour, led by current World No. 17 Jrmy Flores (FRA), 21, will start their Brazilian campaign tomorrow in the fourth event of the year. With longtime ratings favorites Joel Parkinson (Gold Coast, AUS) and Taj Burrow (Western Australia, AUS) currently leading the ASP Top 45 respectively in first and second position, the battle for the title will resume in the Brazilian waves of Santa Catarina, the seven Europeans surfers all looking to grab valuable points to climb up the ratings.
Flores, who has dropped out of the ASP Top 15 after the last contest in French Polynesia, will be much awaited for his start in the event where he placed runner-up in 2008 to event winner Bede Durbidge (Gold Coast, AUS). Flores, who turned 21 in April, remains Europes best competitor on the ASP Dream Tourwith several big results including three semifinals (two at Trestles and one on the Gold Coast in the last couple of years) and has the potential to post a second consecutive solid performance in Brazil, the New Caledonian resident confidently pursuing his career.
I am feeling good at the moment and I believe that my surfing is getting better eventhough the results are not showing it so far this year, Flores said. I feel Ive improved a lot from last year and I think it is the most important.
Flores, who will surf in Heat 15 of Round 1 when competition gets underway at Santa Catarina for a first match-up against Australian experienced surfer Chris Davidson and fellow European solid surfer Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT). Flores and Pires last encounter was at Bells Beach in 2008, where the French wunderkind took the best out of their battle.
Only Basque representative among the ASP Top 45, Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK), 23, will be looking to confirm his recent exceptional performance in the Billabong Pro Tahiti where he placed 3rd defeating reigning and nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (Florida, USA) and 2008 ASP Rookie of the Year Dane Reynolds on his way. Aranburu, whi is on his second year as a full-time ASP World Tour competitor, is currently rated No. 19, his best ranking ever which makes him the second best European on tour at this stage, a status that should give him confidence for his Brazilian run.
ASP World Tour rookie and current best European rookie Tim Boal (Anglet, FRA), 25, will be one to count with when he paddles out for the opening heat of the event against South African athletes Jordy Smith (Durban, ZAF) and tour veteran Greg Emslie (Durban, ZAF). Boal, who is ranked equal No. 25, will be looking to better his three consecutive 17th places at the first events of the year to rise in the international ratings and confirm his unquestionable talent. Boal, whose surfing should fit well in the beachbreaks of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, will still have to pass one of the inform men of the moment, the talented Jordy Smith.
Looking to secure their first big result this year will be ASP Dream Tour rookies Marlon Lipke (Faro, DEU) and Michel Bourez (Tahiti, PYF) and experienced surfer Michael Picon (Capbreton, FRA) who havent been able to shine in 2009 against the worlds best surfing athletes. Much expected as a potential Rookie of the Year since he qualified, Bourez will be focused on a first big result when he paddles out against Australian representatives Kieren Perrow and Drew Courtney for his start in the event. Last but not least to fly the yellow star banner will be Portuguese surfer Tiago Pires, currently sitting on the requalifying bubble at No. 30 and definitely in form to express his classic powerful surfing.

Worlds Most Elite Surfers Ready for Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro Battle

IMBITUBA, Santa Catarina (Friday, June 26, 2009) The worlds most elite surfers are one day away from commencing the waiting period for the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro and throngs of South American fanatics are descending upon the tiny Brazilian town of Imbituba for a glimpse at some of the best surfing on the planet.
Stop No. 4 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, which has been moved from second-to-last to fourth on the ASP World Tour schedule, will utilize the traditional competition format, allowing the worlds best surfers a minimum of two opportunities to surf before elimination.
Taj Burrow (AUS), 31, current ASP World No. 2, is having a sterling year on the ASP World Tour with an equal 3rd from the Gold Coast and a runner-up finish from Tahiti (as well as an uncharacteristic 17th from Bells) tallied into his score line. Ever consistent in the punchy beach breaks of Brazil, Burrow is one of the event favorites heading at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.
I’m really happy with my season so far, Burrow said. I was upset with a 17th at Bells, but really stoked to make the Final at Teahupoo thats a really hard place to get a result. I’m now so excited to take on what are probably my stronger events on tour Brazil, Jeffreys, Trestles and then Europe.
Citing the rescheduling of the event as well as the reversion to the traditional competition format, Burrow foresees additional flare and value at this seasons event.
I think the change in the time of year is fine, Burrow said. I’m curious to see if the waves will be any different. I think I prefer the traditional format better as it’s good to get a second shot after traveling halfway around the world. You need to adjust to certain countries, the climate, your boards and the waves. One shot is kind of brutal so Ill be excited to compete in the traditional format here in Brazil.
Burrow will face replacement surfer and current ASP World No. 13 Jay Thompson (AUS), 26, and wildcard Gustavo Ferreira (BRA) in Round 1 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.
Adriano de Souza (BRA), 22, current ASP World No. 5, is another contender for the 2009 ASP World Title. Holding a runner-up finish from the Gold Coast and a 5th from Tahiti (as well as a 17th from Bells) in his pocket, the former ASP World Junior Champion will look to climb even higher on the ASP Dream Tour ratings during his fourth season amongst the elite.
This has been my best year so far, De Souza said. Im currently in the Top 5, and I feel like I have a good chance for a result in Brazil. Im feeling fresh this year and a lot of things are going my way. Im really looking forward to the event here.
As the highest-rated Brazilian on the ASP World Tour, the hopes of a nation rest upon the young natural-footers shoulders. Although having a less-than-ideal history at the event, De Souzas consistent and ever-impressive improvement amongst the worlds best gives the local contingent confidence in a potential Brazilian victory.
It does feel different competing in my home country, De Souza said. I kind of feel like every Brazilian will be counting on me, and although I think I have a good chance here, its too early to tell. Joel (Parkinson) and Mick (Fanning) are surfing so well so theyll be difficult to stop. Also, I havent ever done well here Ive never got past Round 3. However, I think I have a good opportunity to improve on that this year.
De Souza will take on 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 23, and replacement surfer Neco Padaratz (BRA) when Round 1 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro commences.
This years Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro will play a crucial role in the hunt for the 2009 ASP World Title with current ASP World No. 1 Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, and perennial threats Burrow, Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, C.J. Hobgood (USA), 29, and others all looking to consolidate on already-solid season openings.
Kelly Slater (USA), 37, reigning nine-time ASP World Champion, will look to rebound at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil after three consecutive equal 17th place finishes in 2009 his worst run ever on the ASP World Tour. Slater will face fellow American Tim Reyes (USA), 27, and 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie Marlon Lipke (DEU), 25, in Round 1 of competition.
The Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro will begin its waiting period tomorrow, Saturday, June 27, 2009, and run through July 5, 2009.

Mavericks Surf Ventures, Inc. (Mavericks) today announced that the official waiting period for The 2009/2010 Mavericks Surf Contest will open on November 1, 2009. Mavericks CEO Keir J. Beadling summed up the excitement, saying, Were thrilled to announce that this years big-wave contest season will begin earlier than ever before. We have long understood the importance of increasing the size of the contest window, but havent been able to do so. Last seasons events further highlighted how valuable a November opening date can be. Now, thanks to the support of everyone involved with the contest, we will make the November opening a reality.
Todays announcement was especially meaningful to the athletes who surf Mavericks. After watching the last contest season come and go without any contestable surf, the competitors are more eager than ever for the 2009/2010 contest season to begin. Beadling added, Last season was obviously very difficult for both the surfers and the fans. This year, we are going to do all we can to ensure that the surfers and fans alike get to experience a memorable contest. While we are still at the mercy of Mother Nature, we can now say that we are better prepared than ever for what she throws our way.
Beadling also thanked the sponsors who made the November 1st opening date possible. We are grateful to our sponsor partners whose support was vital to making the opening of the contest season in November a reality, and for ensuring that the surfers will be competing for a record-breaking $150,000 prize purse. We are fortunate that all of our sponsor partners recognize the importance of opening the contest window on November 1st, and that they have demonstrated their commitment to making sure we are able to do so.
Along with announcing that the upcoming contest season will open at the start of November, Mavericks also announced that FUEL TV will soon air a programthe Very Best of Mavericksthat highlights the best days at Mavericks over the past several years. The program will feature stunning footage of the action from these amazing sessions and will premiere this August. Fans can stay tuned for additional details about the FUEL TV program, plus a major new partnership for this seasons Mavericks Live Tour concert series, by keeping an eye on www.maverickssurf.com. Although the contest season is still a few months away, we celebrate Mavericks all year round, noted Beadling. Between the FUEL TV show and the upcoming Mavericks Live Tour concert series, fans should have enough to hold them over as they await the start of the 2009/2010 contest season.

Portugal receives, for the first time, the most important professional SURF challenge.
From Oct 19th to Oct 30th, Peniche will receive Rip Curl Pro Search, the 9th stop of the ASP World Tour
In the Press Conference were: Laurentino Dias, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sport, Frederico Costa, Vice-President of Tourism of Portugal, Antnio Jos Correia, Mayor from the Peniche Council, Tiago Pires, international surfer, Fred Basse, CEO of RIP CURL Europe, and Jos Farinha, General Manager of RIP CURL Portugal.
Jos Farinha mentioned the importance of Rip Curl bringing such an event to Portugal and outlined once more the environment concern, asking all the surfers and the people in general to preserve all the beaches and the environment.
Fred Basse remembered that, since his first time in Portugal, 20 years ago, RIP CURL was sure of the wave potential, such has the hospitality of the Portuguese people, especially from the people of Peniche. This event confirms that all this statements are true.
Tiago Pires, also known as Saca, confessed that he expects to take some steps up in the podium because he is playing home in the last edition of this stop in Bali, Tiago got the 3rd place.
Antnio Jos Correia reinforced the proud that Peniche has, being the chosen city by RIP CURL and by the international surfers to receive this event. Peniches Mayor ended the Press Conference, giving a serigraphy, in the name of Portugal, by Antnio Carmo, named Mar Salgado, to Frad Basset the RIP CURLs Europe CEO.
Frederico Costa spoke about some reasons to support surf in general and this event in particular, such as the promotion of the county, the opportunity of getting more tourists in October, since is not a high season and support the growth of local economy
Laurentino Dias started his interviewsaying hello to all the Portuguese surfers. I have no modesty saying that the Government was the one who supported surf the most said the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sport during his interview. The various centers where surf has been included, and that we have all over the country are the proof of the bet. The number of high performance centers, where surf has been included, are the proof of the confidence that everyone has in surf and in all the national and international surfers.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Monday, June 22, 2009)
Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure presented by Jacks (ASP Grade-4)
Event No. 4 of 10 on the 2009 ASP North America Pro Junior Series (Men)
Huntington Beach, California, United States of America
June 28-29, 2009
Top Seeds Set Sights on ASP Grade-4 Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure
The fourth stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Pro Junior Series, the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure presented by Jacks, will be the most critical event on all surfers campaigns towards qualification for the ASP World Junior Championships due to its ASP Grade-4 status. The highly anticipated event will hit South Huntington Beach Pier from June 28 through 29, 2009.
With all surfers on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series looking to compile their best four results this year in an attempt to finish within the top three in order to earn an ASP World Junior Championships berth, the additional points on offer at this years only ASP Grade-4 event will play a crucial role in all surfers overall rating for 2009.
Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA), 16, was the only American finalist in last years Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure and is currently sitting atop the ASP North America Pro Junior Series ratings after three events. The stylish regular-footer hopes to capitalize on the additional points on offer at the upcoming contest in order to extend his ratings lead over the field, but knows he is up against a barrage of tough competition.
Last year I was in disbelief to make the final with those guys, Doheny said. It was fun to surf against one of my favorite surfers, Julian Wilson. Its gnarly with all the international guys doing the contest, but guys like Dillon Perillo, Conner Coffin and Nat Young are just as good as the international boys to me.
Doheny finished third overall on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series last year and his appearance in the Final at the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure was an imperative result in helping him achieve an ASP World Junior Championships berth.
This contest is really important for me because its a Grade-4 and its the one contest you want to do well in to make it to Worlds, Doheny said. I really like Huntington Beach as well. Its like my second home break, so, its going to be fun.
Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 18, who is currently rated third on the regional series, claimed a victory at the Arnette Pro Junior last month and is looking to carry his momentum to the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure. The explosive goofy-footer is a constant threat to his competition and hopes a consecutive solid result will place him in good standing on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series.
I’m super stoked to have won a contest this year, Young said. It was my first win so far this year so hopefully I can get on a little roll. I would like to back up my result at the Arnette with another solid result. I think whoever does well in this contest between the top 5 guys will take the lead, so I’m hoping to do my best and see where that puts me.
Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA), 19, was the early season regional ASP Junior ratings leader, but due to unfortunate circumstances, was unable to enter the Arnette Pro Junior, falling to sixth overall. The Malibu local is looking to gain some important ground at the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure to regain his ratings lead over the entourage of talent that make up the ASP North America Pro Junior Series.
It definitely focuses me more on the Nike event and also the rest of the events because I have to do the best I can to qualify for worlds, Perillo said. Missing that event really pushed me back so Ive got to play catch up. Now that I’m not in first anymore I don’t feel pressured. Instead, I just really need to do well.
The Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure will run from June 28-29, 2009 at South Huntington Beach Pier and will begin at 8am local time. The event will be webcast LIVE via www.nike6pierpressure.com
